Specifying Projects in the Philippines

Add to Folder PDF

Known as the Gems of the East, the Philippines is a nation of many influences—from Spain, China, and the United States—effectively making it the crossroads of world cultures. More specifically, Spanish beliefs have provided a spiritual anchor, Euro-American traditions have fostered socioeconomic progress, and Asian heritage has strengthened historical ties. Given the abundance of cultures, what unifies this diverse society is largely family and religion, combined with an appreciation for art, fashion, music, and food.

As a place where many different cultures coexist, it’s not surprising that Philippine design and architecture is a hybrid of different styles. From colonial to modernist, various influences have been incorporated into the Filipino design lexicon and reimagined—with references to local festivities, indigenous tribes, native materials, and climate conditions, for example—to become expressions unique to the Philippines.

When specifying projects in the Philippines, culture is an important characteristic. However, considerations such as plumbing configuration and typical building construction affect what products are specified, especially in the bathroom.
